In this scavenger hunt style race, customers will have to visit all participating shops and complete a “roadblock” at each shop. Once they complete the mission they will be given a clue to the location of their next “roadblock”. The first customer to complete all of the missions and finish the race will win a Yeti cooler!

The Huntsville Public Library Friends’ Art Contest will be held during Summer 2019. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” The contest is open for all five through 18 year olds and fifteen winners will be selected. Correctly filled out submission forms are required to be eligible as is artwork that adheres to the submission guidelines. The deadline to submit your artwork is Monday, August 12. Winners will be announced in September.

Enjoy a half-hour of developmentally appropriate activities featuring stories, songs, and rhymes Mondays at 10:30 a.m. This program introduces little ones to the story time experience and is perfect for developing language and vocabulary. Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! It’s an exercise program offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older.

With just a few clicks, you can learn how to animate! Whether it’s making a character dance or talk, you can make a character come to life in endless ways by learning the basics of computer science with animation. Come to “Animate a Name,” a fun, first introduction to animation for ages 5 to 10 years from 11 to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays in June in the Nash Board Room at the Huntsville Public Library. Participants will learn events, sequencing, loops, and more!. Space is limited and registration is required for this FREE event. This class requires no previous coding or animation experience and is designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science. Participants are welcome to bring their own laptop or use a library laptop.

When researching your family tree, there are several tips and tricks that can save you time and trouble. Come to the Huntsville Public Library from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23 to find out more. Walker County Genealogical Society member Emmy Bushman will share some secrets that will help you with your research. Future meetings will be May 21 and June 18 in the Huntsville Public Library’s Dickenson Genealogy Room. Registration is required. The sessions are sponsored by the Walker County Genealogical Society. Story Time is a fun early literacy program for kids 5 and under at the Huntsville Public Library. Join us for interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts three times a week in the Staggs Community Room. The early literacy practices featured each week help build the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. Story Time offers caregivers and parents an opportunity to experience early literacy practices in action, discover great books and resources for home use, and socialize with other parents after Story Time. There is something new each week! Sign-up is not required. Story Time is held on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday mornings.

Appreciate the beauty of nature at “All About Butterflies” with the Houston Museum of Natural Science presentation at the Huntsville Public Library. Learn about metamorphosis and more in this interactive program with caterpillars and butterflies. Join us on Wednesday, June 19 in the Staggs Community Room. The Houston Museum will present six 30 minute presentations for up to 30 children and their accompanying adults per session. The sessions will be held at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m. This program is best suited for ages 2 and up.

The Huntsville Public Library is pleased to announce an opportunity for genealogy enthusiasts and newcomers alike to meet with experienced and qualified genealogical researchers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One-hour sessions will be offered weekly on Thursdays. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendance will be limited to no more than four researchers. The small group will allow each participant to receive individual attention. Sign-up is not required. This program is for adults 17 and older.

The Texas Poison Center Network will be at the Huntsville Public Library at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 for an informative presentation on the venomous snakes of Texas. This preschool and elementary school-age presentation will discuss ways to stay safe from snakes as well as tips to avoid ingesting household products that may look appetizing. No live snakes will be at this event. Join us in the Staggs Community room for this free event.

If your family tree is missing some branches, then sign up for “Exploring Ancestry.com”, a workshop devoted to teaching the basics of this online family history resource. The workshop will be held on the first Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Develop the skill sets needed for online genealogical research. Learn how to navigate the different learning centers and databases. Discover family tree members using Ancestry.com tools such as vital, census, military, and immigration records. The site is free to library patrons when used on the library’s computers. Limit 4 per session.

Residential yard waste collection service is provided two to three times per month: The 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of each month, this is automatic and there is no call-in required. Yard waste is classified as leaves, grass, pine needles, yard clippings and small brush (green waste).
The total number of bagged, canned or bundled yard waste is limited to twelve (12) per household per collection day. All yard waste materials must be placed within 2 feet of the street's edge no later than 6:00 AM on the morning of the scheduled pick-up.
