Safety
Town is a realistic, chi
ld-sized town designed to provide hands-on education for
children. Lessons on the following topics will be provided: traffic rules,
identification and meaning of traffic signs, bicycle safety, pedestrian safety,
stranger danger, water, electrical, fire and gun safety, poison prevention and
the use of the 911 system. Discussions on these topics will serve to educate
children on the dangers associated with their daily lives. This program will
provide a well-rounded safety education program and will foster a spirit of good
citizenship and etiquette at an early age. Additionally,
children will be able to experience the Fire and Inclement Weather Simulator as
provided by the Huntsville Fire Department.
This
project will fill a void in our community with regards to educating children
about safety. It is the hope of this project to reach over 1,000 children a
year.

The Safety
Town project includes various community stakeholders. Members representing the
City of Huntsville, Sam Houston State University, the Texas Department of
Criminal Justice, and Huntsville Independent School District participate in this
project. Additionally, numerous local businesses have participated and
contributed to this project as well.
The hope and
desire of this project is for Safety Town to serve and benefit children of this
community, and surrounding communities, for many years to come.
Safety
Town's Grand Opening was scheduled for March 23, 2005 at 11:45 AM. The public
was invited to attend this event.
Safety Town
is located within Kate Barr Ross Park located on Hwy 75 North. The site is at
